STEPHEN WELCOMES NEW WEBSITE TO ENCOURAGE YOUNG DRIVERS TO THINK SAFE

Transport Minister Nicol Stephen today welcomed the launch of a new website which provides a one-stop shop for driving related issues aimed at young drivers.

The Scottish Road Safety Campaign's 'Getinlane' website provides drivers with useful information and various interactive tests including a hangover and drinking calculator, reaction tests and quizzes.

The website includes information on:

  • Learning to drive, the driving test and being a new driver
  • The costs of owning a vehicle and a calculator to work out their own costs
  • Driver training plus the chance to win a skid pan session at Knockhill
  • Motorway and winter driving plus personal safety
  • The Law
  • Fatigue and driving with an interactive reaction test
  • Speeding
  • Drink and drug driving which includes a number of fun but informative sections, such as the hangover calculator
  • Motorcycling
  • Driving abroad

Mr Stephen said:

"Young drivers are much more likely to be involved in an accident than older drivers with 17-25 year olds accounting for 10 per cent of licence holders, but over 20 per cent of the accidents. This new innovative website provides useful information and interactive tests which will encourage young people and new drivers to log on and learn more about the many different aspects of driving.

"This one-stop shop means that young people are just a click away from finding easily understood information on any aspect of driving. The interactive tests such as hangover calculators, reaction tests and the wheel of misfortune quiz are a fun way for young people to learn more about the dangers of drink driving, speeding and fatigue.

"We fund the Scottish Road Safety Campaign to develop road safety publicity messages and education initiatives. The Campaign has produced a range of excellent educational resources and has mounted effective publicity campaigns on a range of road safety issues. The 'Getinlane' website is another innovative way to communicate important information to people throughout Scotland."
