Drug Driving Campaign 2005

A study published by the Transport Research Laboratory in 2001 stated that drugs were detected in almost 23% of drivers killed in crashes and, as part of its driver behaviour strategy, the SRSC is committed to promoting the anti-drug-drive message.

Research has shown a public perception that there was no way of catching drug-drivers, and this was addressed by a TV commercial in 2002, highlighting the Field Impairment Tests which were available to police officers.

The second phase of the campaign seeks to tackle the perception held by many drug-drivers that drugs do not affect their driving. This was done using a radio advert and ambient media. The campaign ran in January 2005, and the core message was: 'Drugs affect your judgement; drugs affect your driving; drugs can kill. If you're taking the car, don't take anything else.'
