Research on a Strategy for Road Safety Education

Research was commissioned in 1998 to devise an effective strategy for establishing, promoting and maintaining road safety in the curriculum. The research explored, inter alia, the roles of the Scottish Executive and Local Education Authorities in encouraging the inclusion of road safety education in schools. Its findings were published in November 1999 under the title Road Safety Education in the Scottish Curriculum.

This research identified the mechanisms by which road safety education might be improved and delivered more effectively and equitably in both primary and secondary schools. It defined the role of the SRSC as “To co-ordinate the development of a “core curriculum” and to provide support through the provision of teaching and learning resources”.

As a result of this research, the SRSC set up a strategy steering group, which concluded that the best way to proceed was to appoint a group of experts in the field, to help draw up guidelines for teachers as to how to meet specific targets in road safety education.
