On the Road
On The Road, an adult literacy resource, was jointly developed by Road Safety Scotland, Learning Connections at Communities Scotland and the Department for Transport to provide a resource specifically targeted at young drivers. Young drivers aged between 17-25 are the most likely group of road users to have a car crash and account for a quarter of drivers killed or seriously injured.
The pack aims to:
- give young drivers information about speeding, seatbelts, alcohol/drugs and driving and mobile phones.
- provide effective literacies resources for engaging 16-25 year olds in the development and use of a range of skills, knowledge and understanding that will be of value in everyday life.
- offer an opportunity for learners to achieve SQA Core Skill/Key Skills qualifications.
Each section in the pack looks at particular topics related to safe driving. The ‘Notes for Tutors’ and ‘Worksheets for Learners’ promote the approaches to delivery and practice of literacies learning advocated by the Scottish Executive Adult Literacy and Numeracy in Scotland (ALNIS) strategy. On The Road is a literacy resource that encourages young people to develop a lasting awareness and understanding of central issues related to safe driving. The pack can be used in a range of learning contexts with 16 to 25 year olds, and the activities have been designed to be appealing, interactive and fun, while providing opportunities for individual learners to gain confidence in literacy practices that will be of value in all areas of life.
