Small Interventions

Pass Plus

This is an on-road intervention targeted at young newly qualified drivers in Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. The six-session DSA programme offers practical situational instruction covering driving on motorways and dual carriageways, in and out of town driving, and driving at night and in different weather conditions. A £45 subsidy is awarded to Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire residents who complete the programme while a further £100 subsidy is offered by Aberdeenshire Community Safety Partnership. Young Driver Training Day

This is an annual intervention targeted at newly qualified young drivers between the age of 17 and 25. Half-day events takes place in a number of venues across Grampian. Participants are offered audio-visual presentations from community safety practitioners. The event focuses on issues such as road manoeuvrability and brake reaction. Driving demonstrations with police driving instructors are offered and a seatbelt slide is also on-site. A free prize draw is open to participants with prizes including AcciDON’T driver training and Driving Experience and Skidpan Training at Knockhill racing circuit. An internal evaluation was conducted in 2009.

Momentum

This an annual 30-hour intervention targeted at young people between ages of 14 and 16 in youth clubs in Aberdeenshire and Moray. The programme is structured round a number of sessions which explore issues such as basic car maintenance, attitudes and behaviour, the highway code, traffic laws, and hazard perception as well as the effects of drink and drugs, peer pressure and the driving experience. Discussion groups probe issues such as driver responsibilities and the wider consequences of inappropriate behaviour, while specialist input is delivered by a number of community safety practitioners. Medium Interventions

Take Control

This is an annual 1-hour intervention targeted at S4 students in Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire on a rolling basis. The intervention is delivered within the schools by community safety practitioners, who use of audio-visual material to explore fatal road traffic collisions and investigate how passengers can affect or alter the way in which a vehicle is driven. Driving Ahead

This is an annual 1-hour intervention, taking place within schools, targeted at all S5 students. The intervention is delivered by road patrol police officers, with the aid of audio-visual material and explores issues such as applying for a driving licence, licence holder responsibilities, choosing a driving instructor, insurance, Pass Plus, obtaining advanced motor training, drink and drug driving, seatbelts and speed. Driving Ambition

This an annual full-day intervention, taking place within schools, targeted at all S6 students. The programme is structured around sessions delivered by community safety partners. Police officers explore safe driving techniques and the consequences of road collisions, Fire & Rescue practitioners outline the scene of a collision, while the DSA provide information on choosing an instructor and the driving test. Basic car maintenance and practical driving instruction are also offered. A seatbelt slide is used to demonstrate the importance of wearing a seatbelt. An internal evaluation was conducted in 2008.

Large Interventions

Safe Drive Stay Alive

This an annual intervention targeted at S5 students in Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. Half-day events take place at the Beach Ballroom in Aberdeen over four days and centre round a docudrama of a fatal local road traffic collision. Lighting and music is used as a prelude to the intervention in order to stimulate participants prior to the presentation. The docudrama is supported by emotive experience and testimonies from the community safety practitioners, victims and parents of victims. The event is also supported with a series of thematic road safety TV commercials developed by Northern Ireland Department of Environment.
