Small Interventions

Pass Plus

This is an on-road intervention targeted at young newly qualified drivers. The six-session DSA programme offers practical situational instruction covering driving on motorways and dual carriageways, in and out of town driving, and driving at night and in different weather conditions. A £110 subsidy is awarded to residents who complete the programme. An internal evaluation was conducted in 2003.

Driving 4 Success

This is an annual 15-30-hour intervention targeted at pre-drivers between the ages of 15 and 25 subject to funding. Individual sessions are also delivered to further education students in Adam Smith College and Elmwood College. The programme features a number of sessions covering ownership, the driving licence, road legislation, social and environmental impact of motor vehicles, and the nature of road collisions. Other sessions include training in emergency first aid, basic car maintenance and motor care. Participants also receive practical driving instruction. An internal evaluation was conducted in 2009.

New Driver Evening

This is monthly 90-minute intervention which takes place at Fife Constabulary' head office in Glenrothes and is targeted at new drivers of all ages including young drivers and their parents. The programme uses real crash scenarios and road distraction visuals to highlight problems that new drivers face particularly those of the younger age. Police officers explain the role of the Road Policing Unit and offer tips and advice on how to stay safe and stay within the law. Information about the evaluation process is currently unavailable.

Medium Interventions

Life After Learning

This is an annual intervention, taking place within schools, targeted at all S6 students. The programme is delivered over two 55-minute sessions and is structured round the theme 'Independence = Responsibility". It offers participants presentations and active discussion on issues such as accidents among young drivers, brain development, the consequences of a crash, the causes of crashes, speed, using mobile phones, fatigue, drink and drug driving, rural roads and seatbelts. Large Interventions

Safe Drive Stay Alive

This an annual intervention targeted at S5 and further education students. Half-day events take place at the Rothes Halls in Glenrothes over one week and centre round a docudrama of a fatal local road traffic collision. Lighting and music is used as a prelude to the intervention in order to stimulate participants prior to the presentation. The docudrama is supported by emotive experience and testimonies from the community safety practitioners, victims and parents of victims. The event is also supported with a series of thematic road safety TV commercials developed by Northern Ireland Department of Environment. An internal evaluation was conducted in 2008.
