Momentum

This is an annual 30-hour intervention is targeted at young people between the ages of 16 and 25 in Falkirk subject to funding. The programme is structured round six evening sessions, four hours of driving instruction and a two-day residential. Participants explore issues such as car ownership, basic car maintenance, attitudes and behaviour, the Highway Code and hazard perception as well as the effects of drink and drugs, peer pressure and the driving experience. Discussion groups probe issues such as driver responsibilities and the wider consequences of inappropriate behaviour, while specialist input is delivered by a number of community safety practitioners. MotoLearn

This is a rolling intervention, targeted at selected S4 and S5 students, who are interested in motorcycling. The programme comprises of six full day sessions which take place in the school and at off-site locations. With the aid of the learning resource, Crash Magnets, and additional input from RUTS staff, participants explore issues such as basic motorcycle maintenance and motor care, attitudes and behaviour towards motorcycling, personal responsibility, hazard perception, the Highway Code, the driving test, and motor insurance as well as the effects of speed and drink and drugs. Safe Drive Stay Alive

This an annual intervention targeted at S6 and further education students and apprentices. Half-day events take place at the MacRobert Arts Centre in Stirling University over three days and centre round a docudrama of a fatal local road traffic collision. Lighting and music is used as a prelude to the intervention in order to stimulate participants prior to the presentation. The docudrama is supported by emotive experience and testimonies from the community safety practitioners, victims and parents of victims. Young Drivers Scheme

This is a referral-led intervention targeted at young drivers who have been brought to the attention of prosecution bodies. Participants are offered a free driving assessment by the IAM as an alternative to prosecution. 2MRO's DRIVER

This is an annual intervention targeted at S6 students in East Lothian and Midlothian. This event takes place at Burton Theatre in Musselburgh over 3 days, with 2 schools attending each morning and afternoon session. The intervention includes a performance of the Friend's Disunited play, which is followed by an input from the Emergency Services and also a talk from a crash victim or a relative who share their experience and personal testimony. Students then visit a an information fayre which allows participants to explore and discuss road safety issues, with Partner Agencies, in a more informal environment. Young Driver Challenge

This is an annual intervention targeted at full license holders in East Lothian and Midlothian between the ages of 17 and 25. The full-day event takes place at Jewel and Esk College in Dalkeith. The intervention takes the form of a formal presentation about collision causes and statistics, followed by an input from the Emergency Services personnel. A trauma room Doctor from the New Infirmary of Edinburgh explains how crash victims are treated on arrival. This is followed with an information fayre with input from a number of community safety partners. They explore the real life impact of road collisions focusing on casualties and the impact on the families' of victims. Driving demonstrations are offered by police instructors as well as assessed drives by IAM and RoSPA respectively. A number of manoeuvrability competitions are open to participants on the day with prizes including a Ferrari 360 Experience and a skid pan experience at Knockhill Racing Circuit. Participants are encouraged to complete an evaluation form on completion of the event.

This is an annual 15-30-hour intervention targeted at pre-drivers between the ages of 15 and 25 subject to funding. Individual sessions are also delivered to further education students in Adam Smith College and Elmwood College. The programme features a number of sessions covering ownership, the driving licence, road legislation, social and environmental impact of motor vehicles, and the nature of road collisions. Other sessions include training in emergency first aid, basic car maintenance and motor care. Participants also receive practical driving instruction. An internal evaluation was conducted in 2009.

This is monthly 90-minute intervention which takes place at Fife Constabulary' head office in Glenrothes and is targeted at new drivers of all ages including young drivers and their parents. Half-day events take place at the Beach Ballroom in Aberdeen over four days and centre round a docudrama of a fatal local road traffic collision. Pre-driver Training Module

This is an annual intervention, taking place in schools, targeted at S6 students. The six-week intervention centres round the main reasons why young drivers are so highly represented in accident statistics and encouraging the development of skills throughout life. This is a pilot evening intervention, targeted at young qualified drivers between the ages of 17 and 25 in Scottish Borders. The intervention takes the form of a series of road shows which take place in Hawick, Duns, Peebles and Galashiels. A ‘crashed car’ and a ‘modified car’ are on display at the road shows to illustrate the importance of safer driving. The ‘crashed car’ serves to demonstrate the consequences of car collusion, while the ‘modified car’ seeks to educate young drivers about the legalities of car modifications. In addition to entering a Car of the Night competition participants can also talk to representatives of the Border Escosse Car Club and the IAM. Young Driver Experience

This is a pilot event targeted at young newly qualified drivers between the ages of 17 and 25 and their parents or guardians. The full-day event takes place at the Force Training and Recruitment Centre, based at Jackton in Eastbride and centres around a DVD presentation of 'Reckless Drivers, Wrecks Lives'. This is supported by input from a number of community safety practitioners. Practitioners and other organisations also take part in an information fayre which allows participants to explore and discuss road safety issues in a more informal environment. The event includes practical workshops including a manoeuvrability course by Knockhill racing and a course on advanced driving techniques. Road Safety Input (Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme)

This an annual intervention is targeted at young people between the ages of 17 and 25 in Angus, Dundee and, Perth and Kinross. It offers 6-12 young people 2-3 hours of road safety input as part of an adapted version of Tayside’s Young Fire Fighters Programme. The programmes takes place over six weeks and explores road safety issues using audio-visual material and input from Fire and Rescue practitioners. Pass Plus

Momentum

This is a referral-led intervention targeted at young people who have been brought to the attention of local of authorities in Angus. The intervention takes places subject to funding and current needs. Participants take part in a 30-hour programme exploring issues such as basic car maintenance, attitudes and behaviour, the highway code, traffic laws, and hazard perception as well as the effects of drink and drugs, peer pressure and the driving experience. Participants also receive practical driving instruction. An internal evaluation was conducted in 2008.

This is a rolling intervention, targeted at selected S4 and S5 students in Perth and Kinross, who are interested in motorcycling. The programme comprises of six full day sessions which take place in the school and at off-site locations. With the aid of the learning resource, Crash Magnets, and additional input from RUTS staff, participants explore issues such as basic motorcycle maintenance and motor care, attitudes and behaviour towards motorcycling, personal responsibility, hazard perception, the Highway Code, the driving test, and motor insurance as well as the effects of speed and drink and drugs. Driving Ambition

This is an annual intervention, taking place in schools, targeted at S6 students in Angus and, Perth and Kinross. In Angus a formal road safety presentation and a number of small workshops are delivered by community safety practitioners, while in Perth and Kinross the intervention takes the form of an information fayre. Safe Drive Stay Alive

This an annual intervention targeted at S5, S6 and further education students. Half-day events take place at three locations, the Reid Hall in Forfar, the Whitehall Theatre in Dundee and Bell Sports Centre in Perth, over two months and centre round a docudrama of a fatal local road traffic collision. Lighting and music is used as a prelude to the intervention in order to stimulate participants prior to the presentation. The docudrama is supported by emotive experience and testimonies from the community safety practitioners, victims and parents of victims. The event is also supported with a series of thematic road safety TV commercials developed by Northern Ireland Department of Environment. An external evaluation was conducted in 2007.

WestDrive

This is an annual intervention targeted at S6 students in West Lothian. Half-day events take place in Howden Park Centre in Livingston over three days. The programme includes a performance of the Friends Disunited play as well as a number of presentations delivered by community safety partners. Participants look at current West Lothian road crash statistics and offer advice on learning to drive and improving and developing driving skills. The intervention is supported by real life crash victims and relatives of victims who share their experiences and personal testimony. An internal evaluation was conducted in 2009.

Momentum

This is an annual intervention targeted at young people between the ages of 16 and 25 in youth clubs, schools and colleges. Groups of 12 people take part in a 30-hour programme over a residential weekend. The programme explores issues such as basic car maintenance, attitudes and behaviour, the highway code, traffic laws, and hazard perception as well as the effects of drink and drugs, peer pressure and the driving experience. Discussion groups probe issues such as driver responsibilities and the wider consequences of inappropriate behaviour, while specialist input is delivered by a number of community safety practitioners. Participants also receive practical driving instruction. An external evaluation was conducted on behalf of the Lewis & Harris Youth Association by RoSPA in 2008. Internal evaluations were also conducted by Uist and Barra Youth Association in 2008.
