Road Safety statistics

Scotland’s roads are the safest for 60 years. Statistics compiled in 2009 report the number of deaths fell by a fifth and casualties fell by four percent - the lowest since 1949.

On Scotland's roads in 2009 there were:

• 11,547 reported injury accidents in which 15,030 people were reported as being
casualties;
• 2,485 people reported killed or seriously injured (216 of whom died);
• 9,570 casualties in cars, 116 of whom died
• 2,197 pedestrian casualties, of whom 47 were killed
• 1,019 motor cyclist casualties (of whom 43 were killed)
• 1,474 child1 casualties, 257 of whom were killed or seriously injured (5 of them died)
• 674 child1 pedestrian casualties - 155 were killed or seriously injured (1 died)
